Patterson Continuing to Improve All-Around Game

by Tim Letcher

Prior to last Saturday’s game against Tennessee, Kentucky running back Jason Patterson assumed he would be in his regular role. However, just minutes before kickoff, starting running back Seth McGowan was declared out for the game due to injury, thrusting Patterson into an elevated role.

The redshirt freshman responded with one of the best games of his career. He rushed 16 times for 51 yards and caught a team-high seven passes for 44 yards.

Following Tuesday’s practice, UK offensive coordinator Bush Hamdan spoke highly of Patterson’s effort against the Vols.

“Number one, Jason did a tremendous job,” Hamdan said. We talked about not knowing that Seth wasn’t even going until about three minutes before kickoff. So, it’s a testament to (Patterson), how he’s practiced. We’ve said it all along – you never know when you’re going to get your chance and when you do, for him to go out there and play well was a testament to him.”

Hamdan likes how Patterson has worked hard to become multi-dimensional.

“I think Jason’s doing a good job in developing into a complete player,” Hamdan said. “I think you get to the college level and it goes one way or another. If a running back can be really good in the pass game, it’s like playing with 12 guys. I think he’s leaned on Seth and learned from Seth. He just keeps getting better. He just keeps going to work and improving.”

Patterson knew that he needed to take advantage of his chance.

“They told me I was up,” Patterson said. “You’ve just got to be ready for the opportunity.”

How does Patterson keep himself ready for that opportunity?

“I feel like first, it starts with my coach (running backs coach Jay Boulware),” Patterson said. “He sets our room in the demeanor that every guy has to be ready. He brought in guys and we competed all year long. The agenda in that room is to compete and when you’re opportunity is up, take advantage of it.”

Patterson admits that he is more confident in his play this season.

“I feel like there’s another gear that I can go to,” he said. “But that’s me just taking that step, putting it on film so everybody can see.”

Kentucky quarterback Cutter Boley was pleased with Patterson’s play on Saturday.

“I’m incredibly proud of him for stepping up and making plays when his name has been called,” Boley said.

The Kentucky offensive staff may or may not have McGowan on Saturday, but they can feel comfortable with Patterson, who continues to improve each week.
