C.A. Carter, Karlie Campbell Tie for 18th Place, Wildcats Conclude Fall Schedule
WILMINGTON, N.C. – The Wildcats took their last swings of the year, wrapping up the fall schedule with the final round at The Landfall Tradition at Landfall Country Club in Wilmington, North Carolin, on Sunday.
Earning an 8-over in its final 18 holes, the University of Kentucky women’s golf team assembled a 15-over-par 879 tournament total for ninth place out of 18 teams. The teams that finished one through 11 were all teams that are ranked in the top 45 in the latest Scoreboard rankings, including UK’s recent listing at No. 28.
The Wildcats still finished ahead of some of the top teams in the nation, including No. 18 Kent State, No. 33 NC State, No. 36 Virginia Tech and No. 40 Illinois, while they also topped hosts UNCW, Alabama, Notre Dame, Furman and Maryland.
Kentucky’s competitive culture was on full display this week as it turned in its fourth different top finisher of the season Sunday. C.A. Carter, a sophomore from Lexington, Kentucky, became the fourth player to lead the team at the conclusion of an event this season, while she tied with Karlie Campbell to do so. Previously during the fall schedule, Anastasia Hekkonen led the way after the first event, Cathryn Brown led the way after the second event and Karlie Campbell did so after the third event.
Carter and Campbell each turned in a 2-over tournament total for a share of 18th place on the individual leaderboard. It marked Carter’s best 54-hole total score in her college career, while it tied Campbell’s second best. The T18 finish also was Carter’s best 54-hole tournament finish, while Campbell earned her second finish inside the top 20 after 54 holes.
Carter put together the team’s best score of the final round – an even-par 72 – which included four bogeys, three birdies and an eagle on the par-5 No. 12. It marked her second eagle of the event after she took the same score on the par-5 No. 18 on Saturday. She was one of just two players in the field, which featured 95 student-athletes, to record as many as two eagles throughout the 54 holes.
Cathryn Brown, who came into the final round leading the team on an even-par and T12 individual position, got off to a strong start with a trio of pars and a birdie through her first four holes. However, she recorded four bogeys after that to go 3-over for the final round and the event. She still finished inside the top 25, though, her seventh overall in her college career (includes events playing fewer than 54 holes).
The Bluegrass native now has 15 straight rounds contributed toward the team total.
Anastasia Hekkonen followed up her 1-under in the second round with a 4-over in the final round, turning in a 76 (+4) Sunday. She concluded her final round of her fall finale with a birdie on the par-5 No. 4. The sophomore, who earned an individual championship at the Folds of Honor event to begin the season, rallied a 9-over at the Landfall, finishing in a share of 54th place.
Competing in her first event of the season, junior Brooke Oberparleiter turned in a 7-over in the third round to combine for a 20-over in Wilmington. She finishes at T88.
The Wildcats have concluded all four events of their fall schedule. They’ll take the next three months to train, practice and rest before the spring season begins at the Spartan Suncoast Collegiate Invitational in Sarasota, Florida, on Feb. 15.
