UKTF Alumni Spotlight: Dr. Caleb Wilt Making Strides in Dental Career
University of Kentucky Track and Field alumnus, Caleb Wilt, had a very successful career as a Wildcat both on and off the track and that success continued in the classroom and into the professional world this past spring.
The four-time Southeastern Conference Honor Roll recipient graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in human health sciences in 2019 before starting dental school. Wilt graduated as a Doctor of Dental Medicine from the UK College of Dentistry this spring.
Dr. Wilt’s pursuits in both track and field and dentistry were inspired by his family. His father introduced him to the sport, and he wanted to carry on the tradition of his father and grandfather, who were both hurdlers before him.
As for dentistry, his family members in the industry made him curious about the profession. He enjoyed science classes growing up and liked the artistic, detail-oriented aspects of dentistry.
“Once I saw first-hand the number of opportunities there were within dentistry, my decision was made,” Wilt said.
During his time on the track for UK, Wilt competed in six SEC Championships and qualified three times for the NCAA Outdoor East First Rounds. He is sixth on the UK All-Time Performance list in both the 60H (7.84) and 110H (13.85). After college, he competed professionally in the 2020 USATF Indoor Championships.
“Find balance in your life,” Wilt said, when asked about the advice he would give to current student athletes. “While it is important to devote a lot of energy towards your craft in sports and studies, it is just as important to make time for the people and things you love.”
In July, Dr. Wilt will be opening his own dental practice, Comfort Dental Main Street, in Hamilton, Ohio. He now uses the life lessons he learned from his time competing as a high-caliber athlete while embarking on this new journey.
He explained that teamwork was a valuable takeaway from his track career at UK. Coming together to achieve a team goal on the track translated over to his career in working with other dental students, patients, and staff. Balancing school, studying, training, and socializing also prepared him for navigating new challenges in his career.
“Today, as a young dentist and business owner, life is filled with its own set of hurdles. Now, it is just as important to embrace those challenging circumstances as opportunities to learn and grow,” Wilt said.
Dr. Wilt is also grateful for the relationships he made at UK.
“While there are many, I want to name a few. First, Coach (Allen) Johnson. He opened the door to the University for me which has led me to where I am today. Jason Schlafer, the Executive Associate AD. He has always been a great supporter and friend who helped me connect with other professionals. Dr. McConnell and Dr. Wade, my team leaders and mentors at UK College of Dentistry. And lastly my fiancé, Carly (Hinkle), who was also a member of the track team. We will be getting married in May of 2025 after she graduates from UK College of Pharmacy.”
Though he’s venturing away from Lexington, Dr. Wilt will always be a part of Big Blue Nation.
“Thank you, UK, for a great 8 years. I am a proud alumnus and I look forward to staying connected with the University. Go Cats!”
