by Greg Welsh

FRANKLIN, Tenn. – Paced by a 1-over par 72 from Oakley Gee, Kentucky men’s golf opened play at the Mason Rudolph Championship on Friday with a 12-over team total of 296 at the Vanderbilt Legends South Course (par 71, 7,112 yards). The Cats find themselves in 12th place as unit after a brisk and blustery opening 18 holes saw just two teams finish the day under par.

Gee, a redshirt freshman from Carmi, Ill., made 17 pars and a lone bogey on his round, putting him in a tie for 20th individually at 1-over.

Senior Campbell Kremer recorded a team-high three birdies on his way to a round of 74 (+3), good for T-41 on the leaderboard. Kremer birdied No. 1 (par 4, 414 yards), No. 13 (par 3, 184 yards) and No. 18 (par 5, 522 yards) on a day where circles were sparse on the scorecards. Joining Kremer at 3-over was junior transfer Jansen Preston, who returned to his former school’s home course with a solid opening day which included a birdie on No. 11 (par 3, 166 yards).

Alex Goff was the fourth counting score for Kentucky at 5-over par, placing the graduate T-57. Freshman Michael Hake made two birdies on his opening nine but finished the day with a round of 80 (+9), tied for 69th. Individual participant Kevin Watts is tied for 73rd after day one at +14.
