Kentucky STUNT Sweeps Doubleheader on Saturday
ASHLAND, Ohio – The Kentucky STUNT team swept a pair of games on Saturday, topping Mercyhurst and Ashland inside Kates Gymnasium.
Kentucky (17-6) opened play on Saturday by beating Mercyhurst 23-1. In the first quarter, Kentucky earned the first three points of the period before neither team got a point on the final routine. The Cats led 3-0 after one quarter.
In the second quarter, Kentucky won the first point before the teams tied on the second routine. The Cats would win the final two points of the period and UK led 7-1 at halftime.
Kentucky dominated the third quarter, jumps and tumbling, extending the lead in the process. UK took all four points while holding Mercyhurst scoreless and the Cats led 11-1 through three periods.
The Cats would put the game away in the fourth quarter, team routine. Kentucky won all 12 of the available points in the quarter while holding Mercyhurst scoreless, providing the final margin of victory.
In game two, Kentucky faced host Ashland, a team that has never beaten the Cats. That streak continued on Saturday with a 22-5 UK win.
Kentucky took control of the game early, winning the first three points of the first quarter. Ashland won the final point of that frame, but the Cats led 3-1 after one period.
In the second quarter, Kentucky was able to extend its lead even more. The teams split points on the first two routines before the Cats won the final two points to take a 6-2 lead at the half.
UK put the game away in the third quarter, winning all four of the available points and holding Ashland scoreless. The Cats held a 10-2 lead with one quarter remaining.
Kentucky outscored Ashland 12-3 in the final quarter, team routine, to finish off the win.
The Cats will host the Division I STUNT national championships on April 13 and 14 at Transylvania University. Further details about that event are to come.
