  • Kentucky is 8-9 overall and 1-2 in the Southeastern Conference in 2023-24, while RV/24 Vanderbilt is 16-1 overall and 3-0 in the conference this season.
  • The University of Kentucky women’s basketball program is in its 50th season.
    • UK has a 902-597 (.602) all-time record.

  • Kentucky used the starting combination Brooklynn Miles, Cassidy Rowe, Maddie Scherr, Emma King and Ajae Petty for the sixth time this season and the sixth straight game.
      • UK is 4-2 when using that starting combination.
    • The Wildcats lost the opening tip for the fourth time this season.
    • Maddie Scherr was the first player to score for Kentucky for the third time this season.
    • Saniah Tyler was the first substitute off the bench for Kentucky for the sixth time this season.

 

How It Happened

  • Kentucky got off to a 5-0 start in the first minute and 15 seconds, thanks to a 3-pointer by Maddie Scherr and a steal and score by Ajae Petty.
    • Vanderbilt then kept Kentucky scoreless for the next four minutes, as it enjoyed a 10-0 run and forced UK to burn a timeout (4:44).
    • Out of the timeout, the Commodores used the next minute to turn their 10-0 run into a 15-0 run and a 15-5 lead (3:44).
    • Maddie Scherr snapped the drought by drawing a foul and going 2-of-2 at the line.
    • Vanderbilt continued to use the paint to its benefit, despite Kentucky beginning to do the same, as VU outscored UK, 8-6, down the stretch.
    • Kentucky trailed Vanderbilt, 23-13, at the end of the first quarter.
  • The Wildcats and the Commodores both made five field goals through the first five minutes and 38 seconds of the second quarter, with the Dores hitting one three and two free throws to the Cats no threes and no free throws, as UK trailed VU, 36-23, at the media timeout (4:18).
    • The Wildcats ended the quarter making five of their last five attempts, which formed an 11-6 run.
    • Kentucky and Vanderbilt tied in scoring in the second quarter, 21-21, as UK trailed VU, 44-34, at halftime.
      • Both teams shot 50.0 percent in the first half.
  • UK had an 8-6 run in the first two minutes – despite VU’s back-to-back 3-pointers during that timeframe – as UK cut it to an eight-point deficit (8:06).
    • The Commodores followed with a 17-2 run to take a 67-44 lead as the Wildcats called their third timeout of the game (3:34).
    • Saniah Tyler snapped the drought drawing a foul and going 2-of-2 from the line.
    • Her free shots spurred a 8-2 run.
    • Vanderbilt hit an open 3-pointer on its last full possession of the quarter, as it led 74-53, at the end of the third quarter.
  • Despite UK going on a 9-3 run in the first three minutes of the fourth quarter, which included a 9-0 run, VU snapped its scoring drought at the seventh minute and it was balanced scoring the rest of the game.
    • Kentucky lost to Vanderbilt, 95-73.

 

Player Notes

  • Ajae Petty, a senior forward, led Kentucky with 23 points, a career-high 21 rebounds, two blocks and two steals.
    • She is the first player to record a 20-20 double-double since Valerie Still did so against Charleston on Dec. 19, 1982.
      • Ajae Petty and Valerie Still are the only two players in program history to record a 20-20 double-double in program history.
      • It has only been done three times in program history, twice by Valerie Still and once by Ajae Petty.
    • It marked her fourth straight double-double.
      • Dre’una Edwards was the last player to record at least four straight double-doubles (Nov. 27, 2021 – Dec. 19, 2021).
    • It marked her 10th double-double this season and the 12th of her career.
      • It marked her third 20-15 double-double this season and in her career.
    • It marked the 10th game this season and the 12th game of her career she has collected 10+ rebounds.
