Kentucky Travels to Ole Miss for Regular Season Finale
LEXINGTON, Ky. – Kentucky women’s soccer (9-2-5, 3-2-4 SEC) concludes its regular season schedule with a road match at Ole Miss (6-7-3, 2-5-2 SEC) this Thursday at 8 p.m. from the Ole Miss Soccer Stadium. Fans can catch the action live on SECN+.
The Wildcats have already locked up a bid to the 2023 SEC Tournament but are looking to secure a first-round bye with a victory this Thursday. Ole Miss enters Decision Day on the outside of the SEC Tournament cutline, needing three points for a chance to earn a trip to Pensacola.
UK took down Mizzou this past Sunday, winning a 1-0 affair courtesy of a sixth-minute goal from senior forward Úlfa Úlfarsdóttir. It was the eighth shutout on the season for the Kentucky defense and goalkeeper Marz Josephson, a pairing which has conceded just nine goals all year, the second fewest among SEC teams.
The 2023 season has represented significant progress for a UK side which went winless in SEC play last season. The Cats’ three wins in the conference this year are equal to their total number of victories in the league from 2019-2022 combined, and their 13 conference points are their most since 2014. This year also marks Kentucky’s first bid to the SEC Tournament since 2020 and their first time qualifying with the 10-team format since 2015.
Ole Miss is in its first year under head coach Molly Rouse and has picked up two conference wins thus far, defeating both LSU and Missouri. Currently sitting at eight points in the SEC, the Rebels need a victory on Thursday and some help around the league to earn their spot in the SEC Tournament field. Senior Kelly Brady leads the team with seven goals, while junior goalkeeper Shu Ohba has been impressive in net, leading the conference with 65 saves. The team has dropped its last two matches, falling to a pair of ranked opponents in Alabama and Arkansas.
