ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Georgia – Senior Alex Goff carded an opening-round 3-under-par 67 to lead the Kentucky men’s golf team in a tie for fifth after the first day of the SEC Championship Wednesday at the Seaside Course at Sea Island Golf Club in St. Simons Island, Georgia. As a team, the Cats sit 14th after posting a 10-over-par 290 after the first 18 holes.

The Cats, who will be paired with South Carolina, tee off in second-round play starting at 9:10 a.m. Thursday. The final round of stroke play will take place Friday before the top eight teams advance to match play over the weekend.

Goff continued his standout senior campaign Wednesday, carding two birdies and two bogeys on his opening nine before using three birdies on a bogey-free second nine to post the 3-under 67. The Kings Mountain, North Carolina, native sits three strokes back of co-leaders Caleb Surratt of Tennessee and Thomas Ponder of Alabama.

Graduate Garrett Wood is second in the Wildcat lineup and tied for 39th after a 1-over 71. A native of Mason, Ohio, Wood bogeyed two of his first six holes before bouncing back with a pair of birdies over his final 12 holes to sit a stroke over par.
