Kentucky Athletics Kicks off Sack Hunger Drive at November Home Games

Canned Food and Other Needed Items to be Collected at Football Events Throughout the fall. Those tailgating can donate their unused food items before entering the game.

LEXINGTON, Ky. –  The University of Kentucky Athletics Department, in conjunction with the University of Kentucky Office of Sustainability, will hold its annual “Sack Hunger” food drive the next two home football games: Saturday, Nov. 12 vs. Vanderbilt and the following week on Nov. 19 vs. Georgia.

Fans are asked to bring nonperishable foods items to the games before kickoff. Collection areas will be at Gates 2 and 9 starting at 10 a.m. ET on Saturday.

“We are excited to support UK Athletics goal for a zero-waste Kroger Field by 2030 and see the Sack Hunger food drive as an important component of this work, giving the Big Blue Nation a way to turn unopened tailgating items that might have become part of the waste stream into hunger relief for communities across the state,” Shane Tedder, UK Sustainability Officer said.

The Sack Hunger Food Drive will benefit God’s Pantry Food Bank, which serves 50 counties in Central and Eastern Kentucky in partnership with more than 475 food pantries and meal programs.

The organization’s vision is a nourished life for every Kentuckian. God’s Pantry’s mission is reducing hunger by working together to feed Kentucky communities.

In the aftermath and ongoing recovery efforts of recent flooding in Eastern Kentucky, the cold weather beginning to set in, and the Holiday Season looming, all contributions are greatly appreciated.

The ”Sack Hunger” food drive was last held on Nov. 2, 2021, before the Kentucky football game that day, helping to collect 450 pounds of food items that benefited local food banks.
