Kentucky Stays Disciplined in Windy Conditions on Day One
CLEMSON, S.C. – The University of Kentucky women’s golf team wrapped up its first round of the Clemson Invitational at The Reserve at Lake Keowee (6,386 yards, par 72) in Clemson, S.C.
With clear skies and a high of 63, the Wildcats finished nine-over-par tying for ninth with a collective 297. UK is tied with SEC opponent LSU.
“We did a lot of good stuff on the course today,” said Head Coach Golda Borst. “I thought the team all stayed disciplined and plotted their way around the golf course.
With windy conditions increasing on the back nine of The Reserve, Kentucky continued to battle through the round.
Sophomore Laney Frye is at the top of the player leaderboard tied for third ending her round scoring 70 (-2). Her 510-yard birdie on hole two set the tone for the remainder of her round. On the front nine, the Wildcat tallied four birdies with one on the back nine.
First to tee off for Kentucky was Junior María Villanueva Aperribay who tied for 29th with a 75 (+3). She ended the day on a good note with a birdie on the final hole.
Jensen Castle and Rikke Svejgård Nielsen are two of 11 golfers who currently sit in 42nd place. They each shot four-over-par to tally 76 to kick off the tournament.
Marissa Wenzler will tee off first for Kentucky tomorrow on day two after tying for 86th shooting 81 (+9). Her Saturday morning tee time will be 10:03 a.m. as the Cats will hit the course in the second grouping paired with Furman and LSU.
“This is a tough course, and the greens are very firm which makes it harder to get close to the hole locations,” stated Borst. “Tomorrow’s conditions will be a bit tougher with the wind picking up, so we are looking forward to having some fun and getting back after it!”

BIRDIES FOR TORNADO RELIEF FUNDRAISER
Collectively, the team recorded 10 birdies on the first day of the Clemson Invitational. Prior to this weekend’s tournament, UK Women’s Golf tallied 148 birdies since announcing the start of a new fundraiser to aid fellow Kentuckians in the Western region of the state who were devastated by an EF4 tornado in early December of last year. In partnership with the Kentucky Red Cross, the program is asking for monetary donations or pledges. For each birdie made, beginning with the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate and throughout the rest of the 2022 spring season, money will be given to those impacted by the catastrophic disaster.
Those wishing to donate can do so by clicking here.
