Wildcats Find Success Through Day Two Adversity
MESA, Ariz. – The University of Kentucky Women’s Golf program rallied for a fifth-place finish on day two of the Clover Cup held at the Longbow Golf Club in Mesa, Ariz. The Cats shot two-over-par ending the second round of 18 with a score of 290.
Kentucky dropped one spot on the leader board after day one with the final round of 18 to take place tomorrow. The Wildcats sit behind SEC opponents LSU and Texas A&M who currently hold the first and fourth place rankings. Second and third are presently occupied by Clemson and TCU.
“We hung tough today and it was good to see us finish strong,” stated Head Coach Golda Borst. “The hole locations were a bit harder and we missed in some bad spots, which made it harder to get up and downs.”
On the individual leader board, yesterday’s top Wildcat Rikke Svejgård Nielsen dropped from her shared fourth-place mark to a day two tie for eighth shooting even par on the round. Svejgård Nielsen had an impressive performance on the front nine with three birdies, followed by one on the back nine.
Marissa Wenzler fought hard to raise her placement to tie for 13th shooting one-under-par for the day. Her three birdies on the back nine rose her five spots from her first-day performance.
UK junior Jensen Castle also completed her second round of the tournament tied for 13th shooting one-over-par after yesterday’s one-under-par. She completed her round with two birdies on the front nine with one on the back, but shot four bogies on the day.
Laney Frye rose five placements tying for 50th finishing two-over-par with a round of 74. María Villanueva Aperribay rose one ranking on the leader board tying for 70th place with a round of 77 (5+). Competing on the individual front, Ryan Bender ended day two scoring 83 (+11) in 83rd place.
“Overall, the whole team battled and kept giving themselves opportunities throughout their rounds,” said Borst. “We’ve got the ability to score out here and look forward to getting another shot at it tomorrow morning!”
The Cats will tee off tomorrow morning for the final round of the Clover Cup at 8 a.m.

BIRDIES FOR TORNADO RELIEF FUNDRAISER
Collectively, the team has recorded 40 birdies throughout the first two days of the Clover Cup. Kentucky Women’s Golf announced the start of a new fundraiser to aid fellow Kentuckians in the Western region of the state who were devastated by an EF4 tornado in early December of last year. In partnership with the Kentucky Red Cross, the program is asking for monetary donations or pledges. For each birdie made, beginning with the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate and throughout the rest of the 2022 spring season, money will be given to those impacted by the catastrophic disaster.
Those wishing to donate can do so by clicking here.
