Two Wildcats Under Par Following First Round at Lake Las Vegas

HENDERSON, Nev. – The Kentucky men’s golf team was paced by a pair of 2-under-par scores from Jacob Cook and Garrett Wood on the opening day of play at the Lake Las Vegas Intercollegiate. The Wildcats finished at even-par overall as a team and are tied for sixth with 36 holes to play. Wood and Cook are tied for 12th overall on the individual leaderboard.

Kentucky is in the middle of the pack entering day two with all five starters and individual Zach Norris having enjoyed bright spots throughout the opening round. St. Mary’s edges the field at 12-under par. Little Rock and West Virginia are tied for second at 7-under. UAB fired a 2-under and Kansas City’s 1-under par just topped the Wildcats, Utah and Oregon State for fifth.

Wood got off to a fast start by birding his opening hole of the tournament. He played even par before suffering a bogey at the ninth to make the turn at even par. An eagle at the par-five 14th moved him to under par and he closed out the round with four straight pars. Today’s 70 marks the 29th par-or-better round of his career and the eighth of the season.

Cook picked up a birdie at the second before yielding the shot back at the fifth. The Frankfort, Kentucky, native then churned out back-to-back birdies at the sixth and seventh and made the turn at 2-under par. He got to 3-under with a birdie at the 11th but suffered a bogey at the 13th. Cook finished his round with pars over the next five holes for his sixth par-or-better round of the season. Cook is in search of his fourth top-10 finish of the season.

Alex Goff and Campbell Kremer are tied for 43rd overall after the opening 18 with a 2-over scorecard. Kremer played the opening nine holes at 2-under par, and Goff played even par on the front nine.
Norris, playing as an individual, matched Goff and Kremer with a 2-over 74. Norris also played his best golf of the day on the front nine with an even-par start to his round.

Jay Kirchdorfer charted an 83 but began his round by playing 2-under par through the first five holes. He is in 83rd.

Tuesday marks the second round of the three-day event. The course is scheduled to be set up as a par 72 at 7,204 yards. Teams will tee off from the No. 1 tee box beginning at 10:30 a.m. ET. UK gets play underway during the second round at 11:20 a.m. ET and will be paired with Arkansas State and Louisiana.
