UK Ranked No. 9 in Initial CFP Rankings

by Guy Ramsey

It’s going to be a top-10 showdown on Saturday.

In the first College Football Playoff Rankings released on Tuesday evening, the 7-1 Kentucky Wildcats are ranked No. 9. This is the first time in the five-season history of the CFP that UK has appeared.

UK is joined in the rankings by Georgia. The sixth-ranked Bulldogs will come to Kroger Field Saturday at 3:30 p.m. to face the Wildcats, with the winner to represent the SEC East in the SEC Championship Game.

Kentucky is ranked higher by the CFP than by the other two major polls, where the Cats rank 11th and 12th. That speaks to UK’s on-field results this season, as the Cats boast a double-digit road win over a Florida team ranked 11th by the CFP and a dominant 28-7 victory over No. 18 Mississippi State. UK’s only loss came in overtime at No. 20 Mississippi State.

Seven SEC teams appeared in initial CFP Rankings, giving the league the most of any conference in America. Alabama tops the rankings at No. 1, while LSU checks in at No. 3.

The College Football Playoff matches the No. 1 seed vs. No. 4, and No. 2 vs. No. 3 in semifinal games that rotate annually among six bowl games – the Goodyear Cotton Bowl, PlayStation Fiesta Bowl, Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl, Capital One Orange Bowl, Allstate Sugar Bowl and Rose Bowl Game presented by Northwestern Mutual. This season’s Playoff Semifinals will take place Saturday, Dec. 29, 2018, at the Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic and Capital One Orange Bowl. The College Football Playoff National Championship will be Monday, Jan. 7, 2019, at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California.
