BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – For the second-consecutive week, Kentucky freshman Leah Edmond was honored as the Southeastern Conference’s top-performing freshman. Edmond hauled in the weekly honor after averaging 4.50 kills and 3.17 digs per set in a pair of UK sweeps.
Edmond is the first player to repeat as Freshman of the Week this season. It’s the third weekly honor of the year for the Wildcats, as junior libero Ashley Dusek earned Defensive Player of the Week accolades following the opening weekend of the season.
The 6-foot-2 outside hitter led the way for the Wildcats in wins over Louisville and Lipscomb to end the non-conference season with four-consecutive wins in the form of sweeps. Edmond averaged 4.50 kills, 3.17 digs, 0.67 blocks and attacked at a .385 rate for the week. She’s posted 10 or more kills in 10 of 11 matches this season – including both this week.
In her first taste of the rivalry match between Louisville, the calm, sure-handed freshman from Lexington, Kentucky, torched the Cards for a match-high 13 kills on .346 hitting. She added eight digs, the second most on the team, and a trio of blocks.
Against Lipscomb, Edmond once again led the way with her third career double-double with match highs in kills (14) and digs (11). She posted a .423 attacking percentage, which was the second-highest of her career.
Edmond has reached double-digit kill numbers in all but one match and led UK in kills in 10 of 11 matches thus far. She began playing a full six rotations last week, and has racked up 46 digs in five matches for an average of 3.07 per set after logging just one in her previous six matches combined.
Edmond is the only freshman to rank in the top six of the SEC in both kills and points per set for the season.
Kentucky begins SEC action on Wednesday as UK hosts Georgia for an 8 p.m. tilt in Memorial Coliseum. The match will also air live on the SEC Network with Sam Gore and Missy Whitmore on the call.
