LEXINGTON, Ky. — Freshman outfielder Marcus Carson charted two hits, with a double and a steal, and sophomore outfielder Ka’ai Tom belted a home run, to highlight a six-inning Kentucky fall scrimmage, on Friday afternoon at Cliff Hagan Stadium.
Carson, a native of London, Ky., went 2-for-3 with two runs, a double and a stolen base to spark the Black offense at the top of the order. Tom, a native of Kaneohe, Hawaii, went 1-for-2 with two RBI and a solo homer down the rightfield line in the sixth.
Black also got hits from Austin Cousino, Thomas Bernal, Connor Heady and Jacob Russell, with Bernal and Russell doubling and Heady ripping an opposite-field triple. Blue got hits from A.J. Reed, Dorian Hairston, Troy Squires, Bryce Bastien and Tyler Marshall.
Blue started freshman lefty Logan Salow, a native of Ashland, Ky., who worked three innings. Sophomore southpaw Ryne Combs worked two innings, allowing just the solo homer to Tom. Freshman righty Austin Perry worked three shutout innings for Black in a start.
Black took a lead with a three-run frame in the top of the first inning. Carson led off the inning with a double down the line, taking third on a wild pitch and plating on a second wild pitch. After Max Kuhn drew a full-count walk, Bernal doubled into the gap to score one run, later scoring on Tom’s RBI fielder’s choice.
In the top of the third, Black added to its lead in the top of the third inning, plating two runs for a 5-0 lead. Russell led off the inning with a double into the rightfield gap, taking third on Carson’s single to right field. After Carson stole second and Cousino loaded the bases with a walk, Kuhn hung a sacrifice fly to score Russell. With Bernal at the plate, Carson came around to score on a wild pitch.
Blue got on the board in the bottom of the fifth inning, with Tyler Tipton leading off the inning with a walk, and Troy Squires and Marshall reached on a pair of infield singles to load the bases. Barrett then scored Tipton with a sacrifice fly to rightfield. Reed then smashed a hard-hit single up the middle, off the diving glove of Heady, to score Squires for a 5-3.
The team will return to scrimmage action on Saturday, with a 10-inning scrimmage. Approximate first pitch time is slated for 12 p.m. ET at Cliff Hagan Stadium.
