LEXINGTON, Ky. – After a 20-win season, in which he racked up 15 wins over ranked opponents, University of Kentucky men’s tennis senior Tom Jomby was named the 2014 Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s Ohio Valley Player of the Year, it was announced by the ITA office on Tuesday afternoon.

“I’m very happy for Tom for winning this award,” UK head coach Cedric Kauffmann said. “This is a very prestigious award for Tom to win and a nice prize for a great season that he had. Because of winning this award, Tom now puts himself in position to be the National Player of the Year. We are proud of his accomplishments and his maturing throughout the season.”

Jomby won 20 matches this season, all on the No. 1 court. The senior From Nantes, France, increased his career total to 99-career match wins on Friday afternoon in the NCAA First Round against Denver. Jomby is looking to become just the 16th player all-time to eclipse the 100-career win mark at UK, joining his head coach and volunteer assistant coach, Anthony Rossi. 

The senior from Nantes, France, is currently No. 13 in the ITA singles rankings, which is the second-highest ranked player in the Southeastern Conference. Jomby is also ranked at No. 31 in doubles with Kevin Lai. He was ranked as high as No. 11 (April 15) in singles, and ranked as high as No. 20 in doubles (April 8).

Kentucky takes the court again for the program-record’s fifth-straight Sweet 16 appearance on Friday afternoon against No. 2 Oklahoma. The Wildcats and Sooners will do battle at the Dan Magill Tennis Center in Athens, Ga., with hopes of reaching the school’s second Elite Eight in four years.
