Reid Bedell Joins UK Men’s Golf

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The University of Kentucky men’s golf team has added Reid Bedell, a graduate transfer from the University of South Carolina Upstate to the 2020-21 squad. Bedell was ranked the No. 78 golfer nationally during his senior season and led the Big South Conference with a 70.31 scoring average.

“I am so excited to have Reid Bedell join our Kentucky golf family,” UK head coach Brian Craig said. “Reid will only have one year as a Wildcat while he is working on his master’s certificate.

“Based on his track record in Division I golf, he definitely has a chance to make a big impact on this year’s team,” Craig said. “He is already showing senior leadership with his attitude, work ethic and the relationships he is building with his teammates. I can’t wait to coach Reid this year and watch him help lead our team to a memorable season.”

Bedell who hails from Fair Haven, New Jersey, has appeared in 37 career events and has totaled 11 top-10 finishes. He is eligible immediately.

“I chose Kentucky because of the tradition here and the caliber of school UK is and the reputation it holds,” Bedell said. “I have always wanted to play golf at the highest level and UK has given me the chance to play SEC golf, which has been a goal of mine. I know how close the guys on the team are and how great our coaches are as well, so this turned out to be a perfect opportunity for my final year of eligibility.”

His breakout senior season was cut short due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, but he capped the season in the top 100 becoming the first Spartan to ever crack the national rankings. He was a PING All-Southeast Region Team selection after earning a pair of Big South Golfer of the Week honors. His scoring average led the conference and the team. That mark is also an Upstate program record.

He had four top-10 finishes on the season and also boasted a trio of top-five finishes. Bedell earned co-medalist honors at the USC Upstate One Day Invitational and logged a career-low round of 66 during the second round of his final tournament of the season.

For his career, Bedell owns a 73.82 stroke average. He’s notched 29 par-or-better rounds and his rounds have counted for the team score in 79.5 of his 92 (86.4%) career rounds played. As a junior, he appeared in all 27 events for the Spartans and had three top-10 finishes. He placed sixth overall at the Big South Championship.

He graduated in May with a degree in interdisciplinary studies and a minor in English.
