Baseball and Music: The Loves of Zeke Lewis' Life

by UK Athletics Communications and PR

Zeke Lewis loves baseball. He also loves music. There’s a magic to both the Kentucky senior infielder can’t explain.

“My teammates and I are on the same journey so they understand my music because they’re going through the same things,” Lewis said.

The Atlanta native has found a way to marry his two loves, carving out time for academics, baseball and music in his daily routine. His beats have resonated with teammates and even opponents, with former Missouri star Trey Harris using one of Lewis’ songs as his walk-out music during a series in Columbia in 2017. The SEC Network also used his work during a game broadcast against No. 1 Florida in 2018.

Like his baseball career, the musical journey has been more of a steady climb than rapid rise. He returned to Atlanta several offseasons ago to participate in his first live show with some of his high school friends who helped form the group 4$ound. The venue was packed.

“Of course I was nervous,” Lewis said. “But then my adrenaline got going and as soon as I hit the stage it was like I blacked out. It’s similar to baseball, you always get that tingly feeling because you love it so much. Once the lights come on it’s game time.”

This week would have been seen Lewis go through Senior Day ceremonies, putting the bow on a career that saw him play on UK’s first Super Regional team and with more than two dozen Major League Baseball draft picks. Instead, the world’s fight against COVID-19 brought an abrupt end to the season in early March just when Lewis was playing his best baseball, having 12 hits over his final six games.

He has been extended an offer to return for the 2021 season after the NCAA granted eligibility relief and is working through that decision. Whatever that choice ultimately may be, Lewis knows one thing, music always will be a part of his life.
