Kentucky Men’s Tennis Heads to ITA Ohio Valley Regional
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The Kentucky men’s tennis team will continue the fall season with one of the most important tournaments of the season, the ITA Ohio Valley Regional. Play will begin tomorrow and the finals will take place on Oct. 23. All matches will be played indoors at the Goodfriend Tennis Center and the Knoxville Racquet Club.
The singles and doubles champions will automatically advance to the ITA National Fall Championships from Nov. 1-5 in Indian Wells, California.
Representatives from Austin Peay State, Ball State, Belmont, Butler, Dayton, ETSU, EKU, Indiana, IUPUI, Louisville, Memphis, MTSU, Morehead State, Murray State, Purdue, Tennessee Tech, Tennessee, Tennessee-Chattanooga, Vanderbilt and Wright State will compete.
Most of the roster will play in the tournament. Six players – No. 1 Will Bushamuka, No. 5 Ryo Matsumura, No. 6 Trey Yates, No. 10 Trey Yates, No. 22 Jake Stefanik and No. 23 Austin Hussey – are seeded in the singles draw. Cesar Bourgois and Gus Benson will also compete in the singles portion of the regional.
The second and third round of the singles tournament will take place on Friday, Oct. 20, with the fourth round on Oct. 21. The quarterfinals and semifinals will take place on Oct. 22, and the championship will be on Monday, Oct. 23. A full schedule and results throughout the weekend can be found here.
Kentucky will also compete in the doubles draw. Three duos – No. 12 Stefanik/Yates, No. 13 Hussey/Matsumura and No. 15 Bushamuka/Benson – are ranked. The duo of Bourgois and Wallart will also compete.
Only 64 doubles duos will compete in the Ohio Valley Regional. The second round will take place on Oct. 20 while the third and quarterfinal rounds will take place on Oct. 21. The semifinals and finals will take place on Oct. 22.
