Wildcats Fall 4-0 at No. 24 West Virginia
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The Kentucky Wildcats (1-8-3, 1-3-1 SBC) concluded their three-game road trip tonight with a 4-0 defeat against the No. 24 West Virginia Mountaineers (6-2-4, 2-1-2 SBC) at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium in Morgantown, W.Va.
The opening 30 minutes of the match produced little to no goal scoring opportunities for either side, until Kentucky was awarded a free kick just outside the 18-yard box after a West Virginia foul was committed on forward Thomas Nielsen. The ensuing free kick from midfielder Eric Onos was deflected away by the Mountaineers’ defensive wall.
The Wildcats created two more scoring chances in the opening half of play, first with another shot by Onos, forcing West Virginia goalkeeper Toby Mawer to make his first save of the night, and second by Bains Smith, missing an opportunity in front of goal following a UK corner.
The scoreline would remain level at 0-0 heading into the halftime break.
West Virginia opened the scoring early in the second half after a defensive miscue from the Wildcats, leading to a Mountaineers goal from Joshua Dudock in the 47th minute, coming off a cross from defender Harry Hogben.
The Mountaineers tacked on three more goals over the final 33 minutes of the match, scoring in the 58th, 69th and 86th minutes to seal their second Sun Belt victory of the season, dropping the Wildcats to 1-3-1 in conference play.
Kentucky will return home next week for a matchup with the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers at The Bell on Oct. 21 at 7 p.m. ET.
