Wildcats Fall 4-1 vs. No. 3 Ohio State
LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Kentucky Wildcats (0-3-2) fell in a 4-1 result to the third-ranked Ohio State Buckeyes (5-0-0) tonight at the Bell Soccer Complex.
The Buckeyes took an early lead in the 14th minute and doubled their lead less than five minutes later in the 19th minute to put the Wildcats on the back foot prior to the 20-minute mark.
In the 36th minute, goalkeeper Benjamin Rasmussen was sent off with a straight red card following a foul outside the 18-yard box, forcing the Wildcats play with 10 men for the remainder of the match. Kentucky would later go down to nine men in the 57th minute with forward Thomas Nielsen picking up a second yellow card.
The Wildcats drew one back in the 55th minute to cut the Buckeyes lead in half, coming off a goal scored from freshman forward Costa Iliadis, his second of the season, with an impressive left-footed finish into the far corner of the net, shifting the momentum into the home side’s favor.
Ohio State would later regain that momentum and add two more goals to their tally over the final half hour of the match, coming from forwards Martin McLaughlin and Josue Youta, resulting in a 4-1 win for the Buckeyes on the road.
The opposition outshot the Wildcats 21-9 tonight, including a 9-2 advantage in shots on goal. The game also featured 10 total cards across both teams.
Next up for the Wildcats is a meeting with the 20th-ranked Marshall Thundering Herd on next Friday, Sept. 18 at 7:30 p.m. to open Sun Belt Conference play at The Bell.
