Kentucky Falls 2-1 at Home vs. Coastal Carolina
LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Kentucky Wildcats (1-9-3, 1-4-1 SBC) fell in a 2-1 result against the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers (4-5-4, 2-2-2 SBC) on Wednesday night in their return to the Bell Soccer Complex.
The loss drops the Wildcats to 1-4-1 in conference play and 10th place in the Sun Belt Conference standings entering the final three game stretch of the regular season.
During the first 25 minutes of play, Kentucky dominated in the possession department and recorded eight shots, four of which were on goal, but were unable to claim an early lead. The Chanticleers were able to settle in and gain more momentum over the final 20 minutes of the first half, but the scoreline held at 0-0 heading into the halftime break.
The score continued to remain scoreless for the opening 22 minutes of the second half, until Coastal took the lead in the 68th minute with a goal from midfielder Alberto de Miguel, coming off an assist from Pearse O’Brien.
The Chants doubled their advantage just three minutes later in the 71st minute following a turnover at the back from Kentucky goalkeeper Benjamin Rasmussen, leading to a tap-in goal for Coastal forward Sammy Murphy to give the traveling side a 2-0 lead with less than 20 minutes remaining.
In the 90th minute, the Wildcats were awarded a penalty after a Coastal foul on midfielder Yasha Schaerer inside the 18-yard box. Schaerer stepped up and scored the kick from 12 yards out to cut the Chants lead in half and get Kentucky on the board. It would ultimately be too little, too late, as the Wildcats dropped their fourth consecutive match, and Coastal Carolina would leave Lexington with all three points and a 2-1 win.
The Wildcats will head back out on the road later this week on Oct. 25 for a matchup against current Sun Belt leaders James Madison in Harrisonburg, Va.
