Wildcats Rescue Late Draw vs. Evansville
LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Kentucky Wildcats (0-2-2) rescued a draw against the Evansville Aces (0-3-1) thanks to freshman Thomas Berteotti’s first career goal in a 1-1 result in a Friday night matchup at the Bell Soccer Complex.
The Wildcats fell behind early, as Evansville took a 1-0 advantage in the 12th minute with a goal from forward Alejandro Fernandez, his first of the season.
Kentucky dominated the possession and led the Purple Aces 10-3 in total shots but were unable to score an equalizer prior to the match’s intermission. Evansville continued to maintain their one-goal advantage heading into the halftime break following the opening 45 minutes of play.
The Wildcats found their equalizer in the 74th minute, with Berteotti netting his first career goal, coming off an assist from fellow freshman forward Costa Iliadis, to get Kentucky back on level terms with just over 15 minutes to play.
The Wildcats created several more scoring opportunities in the final moments of the match, but were unable to grab a winning goal, as the score line remained 1-1 as the 90-minute whistle blew.
Kentucky outshot Evansville 18-12, but the Purple Aces controlled a 4-3 advantage in shots on goal. Freshman goalkeeper Benjamin Rassmussen came up big once again for the Wildcats, recording three crucial saves, improving his season tally to 11.
The Wildcats will continue their homestand next week on Tuesday, Sept. 8 against the Ohio State Buckeyes at The Bell, before the start of Sun Belt Conference play on Sept. 18 when they welcome the 15th-ranked Marshall Thundering Herd.
