Men’s Golf Leads After Day One of Bluegrass Collegiate Invitational
LEXINGTON, Ky. – Kentucky men’s golf holds a nine-shot lead as darkness suspended round two of the Bluegrass Collegiate Invitational on Monday at the University Club of Kentucky’s Big Blue Course (par 71, 7013 yards).
The Wildcats are 3-under par as a group with between two and four holes remaining in the second round, nine shots clear of the nearest chaser Marquette. Four of the Wildcats’ five starters are inside the top 10 individually in the 92-player field, navigating blustery conditions.
Originally scheduled to play 36 holes, a 40-minute weather delay during the morning hours prevented the 17-team field from getting through the second round. Round two will resume on Tuesday morning at 9 a.m., with players rolling directly into the final round in the same pairings.
Cameron Phillips, who made a hole-in-one on No. 17 just before play was called, is tied for the lead individually at 2-under par. Phillips aced the 230-yard par 3 with a 4-iron to get back to even-par on his second round. The freshman was 2-under par in round one and is tied with Tennessee Tech’s Haden Maxwell atop the leaderboard.
Fellow freshman Cole Stockard is right behind Phillips, sitting tied for third at 1-under par for the tournament and 4-under on his second round through 15 holes.
Jacob Settles finds himself in a tie for fifth, with the highlight of his day coming in round two on No. 7 (par 5, 524 yards), where he carded an eagle.
Jack Schoenberger, the senior captain, is tied for ninth at 2-over par. Schoenberger was one of two Wildcats to post an under-par score in round one, carding a 1-under round of 70 on the first 18.
Jacob Lang fought back from a 5-over par opening round and is just 1-over on his second round with three holes to play. He is tied for 26th at 6-over total, alongside Luke Coyle, one of UK’s individual competitors this week. Charles Cauthen, the other Wildcat individual, is tied for 49th at 11-over par.
The Wildcats lead the field in both eagles (two) and birdies (28) after day one. Stockard, Phillips and Schoenberger all have six birdies to lead the team.
Kentucky will look to secure its second win of the spring on Tuesday, having won the Colleton River Collegiate back in March.
