Cathryn Brown Records Fourth Top-10 Tournament Finish
SARASOTA, Fla. – The University of Kentucky women’s golf team, despite turning in its best scorecard of the week in the final round Monday, dug themselves too big a hole in the second round at the Spartan Sun Coast Invitational.
Playing in the final round at Palm Aire Country Club (par 72, 6,191 yards) in Sarasota, Florida, Monday, the Wildcats put together a 6-over-par 294, which marked their best score across three rounds this week. However, it wasn’t enough to overcome an early deficit as they turned in a 43-over-par 907 tournament total to finish in eighth place.
While the team led the tournament on an 8-over after the first round, it suffered a 29-over in the second round that it couldn’t recover from in part because of the gusty elements.
The Wildcats made a convincing push, though, as the four scorers put up more birdies than they did bogeys in their final 11 holes of the event, including going a combined 3-under on the par-4 No. 16.
Meanwhile, three players turned in their best scores of the week in the final round, and a fourth player tied her best score of the week, as the team battled it out until the end.
Cathryn Brown recorded the team’s only two rounds under par this week, including a 1-under in the first round and a 2-under in the final round Monday. She littered a team-best six birdies across her scorecard today, including three birdies and six pars in her final nine holes.
The Eddyville, Kentucky, native finished the tournament just 3-over-par 219 for a share of eighth place. It is her fourth top-10 tournament finish through just six tournaments this season, while she also continued her stretch of 21 straight rounds contributed toward the team total.
Samantha Paradise, in her first lineup appearance with Kentucky, proved she can help the team with her 13-over-par 229 tournament total for a share of 34th place. The junior transfer out of Daytona State College finished second in UK’s lineup.
She outlasted a tough start to the final round, which included three bogeys in her first four holes. But she bounced back with all pars and one birdie the rest of the way to match her first-round 74 with a final-round 74.
Karlie Campbell, too, turned in a final-round 74, her best of the week, thanks to four bogeys and a pair of birdies on the par-4 No. 16, a hole she hadn’t birdied yet, and the par-5 No. 1. She assembled a 14-over-par 230 tournament total for T38.
C.A. Carter, despite recording her cleanest scorecard of the week, still turned in a 5-over in the final round. She found a birdie on her second hole of the day, the par-3 No. 9, a hole she bogeyed in her prior to rounds, but stacked five bogeys on top of that as the day carried on. She pulled together a 16-over 232 tournament total for a share of 46th place. Meanwhile, Anastasia Hekkonen rallied a 4-over on Monday, her best of the week, as she formed a 19-over-par 235 for the event for T59.
The Wildcats will compete next at the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate at Long Cove Golf Club in Hilton Head Island from March 2-4.
