Oweh Excited for Senior Season
When Otega Oweh committed to play for Kentucky, no one likely expected what the 6’4” guard would bring to the Cats. Last season, Oweh led the Cats in scoring, averaging 16.2 points per game and in steals with 57. He scored in double figures in UK’s first 26 games and was eventually named second-team All-Southeastern Conference.
Now a senior, Oweh is looking to build upon his success from last year.
“I’m just trying to play ball and enjoy it,” Oweh said. “This is my last year, so I’m trying to do everything I can this year.”
After his outstanding season in 2024-25, there are expectations surrounding Oweh. How will he handle those?
“The same way I always do,” he said. “I’m still going to work as hard as I can and then when the game comes, not worry about any of that. Just playing well. I’m blessed to have all of the expectations because I’ve never had them before but I’m trying to focus on the main things.”
Oweh said that he likes to show progress in his game every season, and this year is no different.
“I’m excited to get this season going, to make a jump this year,” Oweh said. “I’m big on improving every single year, so that’s something I’m excited about for sure.”
UK head coach Mark Pope has noted that players in his system usually take a big jump from year one to year two. Oweh hopes that will be the case for him as well.
“I feel like your second year, you’re more comfortable because you’ve been here before,” he said. “For me, I know this offense. I feel like I’ve gotten better every year, so same thing this year.”
Oweh has been battling a toe injury in the offseason but says he’s healthy as the regular season approaches.
“I’m feeling good. I’m pretty much back now,” he said. “It felt like (I was out) for a long time, four or five weeks. But I’m back now.”
Oweh likes the makeup of this year’s UK team.
“We’ve got a good team. When you have a good team around you, everything feels good,” he said. “I like where my team is right now. I’m ready to go. Every single day when we get in the locker room, we’re excited to get better, excited to compete, whether that’s in practice, the weight room or just off the court stuff. We have bonded really well.”
While Oweh will likely be in line for several individual awards, he says that his top goal is all about the team.
“Win it all,” he said. “At the end of the day, I’m really just trying to win a national championship. That’s the main goal for all of us.”
Having Oweh back on the roster this season makes that goal even more realistic for this year’s Kentucky team.
