Shane Winstead Passes Away after Cancer Battle

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Shane Winstead – the mother of freshman Kentucky swimmer Madison Winstead – passed away early Sunday morning after fighting cancer for nearly two years.
Shane’s passing comes five months after Madison was granted a waiver by the NCAA to compete in UK’s annual Blue-White Intrasquad Meet so her mother could watch as she donned a Kentucky cap for the first time. In honor of the motto the Winstead family embraced in facing Shane’s cancer diagnosis, the meet was named the Sun Shall Shine Meet.
“We are all saddened about hearing the loss of Shane,” UK swimming and diving head coach Lars Jorgensen said. “The Winsteads have been amazing supporters of our program and we were honored to have our spring meet named for Shane. Sun Shall Shine will always be part of our program.”
Shane was a longtime pharmacy specialist and eventually director of clinical pharmacy services at UK HealthCare and faculty member at the College of Pharmacy. She is survived by her husband, Keith, and children, Clayton and Madison.
Madison is now on campus preparing for her first season as a Wildcat.
“Our team coming together for Madison has been amazing,” Jorgensen said. “The entire athletics department and the UK community have been so supportive. Shane’s legacy will live through Madison forever. Madison is an integral part of our program. The way she has handled everything has been amazing and she is a true inspiration for everyone associated with UK swimming and diving.”
