Peyton Manning threw for 317 yards and three scores in littlemore than a half and Peerless Price added a pair of longtouchdown receptions as ninth-ranked Tennessee kept its slimhopes for a bowl alliance berth alive with a 56-10 thrashing ofSoutheastern Conference foe Kentucky.
Manning bounced back from a sprained knee last week to complete16-of-23 passes. He became the first quarterback in schoolhistory to surpass 3,000 yards in one season and has posted four300-yard games this season.
“My knee feels ok,” said Manning. “I had no problems today. Wehad a lot of confidence coming in. We wanted to come out an puta lot of points on the board and accumulate a lot of yards. Wehad to quit stopping ourselves like we had done in past games.”
“I was proud of this team,” said Tennessee coach Phillip Fulmer.”When we got on track offensively, we felt we could throw theball. I can’t say enough about the gutty performance byManning.”
Manning found Price on scoring tosses of 80 and 59 yards as theVolunteers improved to 8-2, 6-1 in the SEC East. Joey Kent addedfour catches for 64 yards, reaching 1,000 yards receiving forthe second consecutive season.
Kentucky (4-7, 3-5 SEC East) had won three straight but wasunable to contain Tennessee’s offense, which outgained theWildcats, 638-154. It was the first loss for Kentucky since theannouncement that coach Bill Curry would not return for the 1997season.
Curry’s final game at Kentucky saw his squad lose the “Battlefor the Beer Barrel” for the 12th straight season.
“I don’t know what will come next,” Curry said. “I will thinkabout it somewhere. Our preparation this week may have beenbetter. They knew what they wanted to do. We had been drivingourselves in practice. Our practices have been terrific. Thisteam has worked hard.
“I was numb after the game. It all seemed so difficult to takein. I walked on this field for the first time as a freshman in1960. I guess I started and finished here.”
Kentucky quarterback Billy Jack Haskins completed 8-of-18 passesfor 75 yards. Tennessee’s defense has held three straightopponents under 100 yards passing.
