Cathryn Brown, Karlie Campbell Finish T4, Wildcats Move Into Third Place in Spring Debut
BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Wildcats made an impression in the final round of the Paradise Invitational on Tuesday, turning in the lowest 18-hole team round of the day and moving into third place to conclude the event.
The University of Kentucky women’s golf team strung together team rounds of -3, -2 and -7 this week, to assemble an 852 (-12) tournament total in its spring debut at Osprey Point-Raven & Falcon in Boca Raton, Florida. The team’s 7-under in the final round is its best 18-hole team output this season and the team’s 12-under is its best 54-hole tournament total in 2024-25.
Cathryn Brown and Karlie Campbell both landed in the top five of the individual leaderboard on scorecards of 5-under-par 211. Brown came up with four birdies and just a couple of bogeys for a 2-under in the final round, including birding three of her final five holes. Campbell littered a team-high five birdies on the course today, outdoing a bogey and a double bogey, to also record a 2-under Tuesday.
It marked both Brown’s and Campbell’s best finish in their college careers, while it also marked Campbell’s best tournament total in just her three appearances at UK.
Brooke Oberparliter, who played under the weather this week, came up clutch under-par in the final round. She coupled three birdies with two bogeys to record a 71 (-1) on Tuesday and a 215 (-1) for the event, earning a share of 17th place. Her 1-under-par 215 is a career best for the sophomore, while her 17th place finish also is her highest, both through eight tournaments in her college career.
Marta López Echevarría joined Brown and Campbell with a 2-under-par 70 on Tuesday. Her tournament got better as the rounds went on – a testament to her leadership – stringing together a 75, 72 and 70 at the Paradise Invitational. Despite beginning her round with a bogey on the par-3 No. 7, she recovered with back-to-back birdies on the very next holes. Altogether, she put together a 1-over-par 217 for a share of 25th place.
The senior has finished in the top 25 in all four of her appearances this season.
Just a freshman competing in her second lineup, Anastasia Hekkonen turned in a 5-over on Tuesday. It was a pair of back-to-back doubles on hole Nos. 17 and 18 that plagued her round, despite a good day on the rest of the course. She went 8-over for the tournament to earn a tie of 61st place.
The Wildcats will travel back to Lexington to get ready for their next tournament in just three weeks. Kentucky will take on the Spartan Sun Coast Invitational at Palm Aire Country Club in Sarasota, Florida, on Feb. 18 and 19.
