Carlie Makarawu Wins Corky Classic 200m, Sets New NCAA Lead

LUBBOCK, Texas and NASHVILLE – Junior Carlie Makarawu ran his signature 200m race for the first time as a Kentucky Wildcat on Saturday, running a time of 20.48 seconds to win the Corky Classic and set a new national lead in the event. He was one of three Wildcats to win on Saturday, as Morgan Davis won the Women’s 200m B Section at the Corky Classic and Grayson Brashear won the Men’s Shot Put Open at the Vanderbilt Invite.

Makarawu, who transferred to Kentucky after winning six JUCO National Championships at New Mexico Junior College, had previously raced the 60m and 300m this season, placing himself as one of the top-five performers in Kentucky history in both events. However, his highly-awaited 200m debut was worth the expectations, as he bests the NCAA leading time heading into the day by some two-tenths of a second.

Running on the same track where he set a JUCO national record a season ago, Makarawu cruised to the win and nation leading time. His time currently places him third in the Kentucky all-time performance list, but his indoor 200m personal best of 20.29 seconds is good enough to top the school record. This was Makarawu’s first race of 200m since the 2024 Olympic final where he placed sixth in Paris. Makarawu, a Harare native, is the Zimbabwean national record holder in the indoor and outdoor version of the race.

Highlighted the Women’s 200m races for the Cats was Morgan Davis’s winning run of 23.96 to take the victory in the B Section of the event. This was Davis’s first time under the 24 second barrier. Hannah Douglas also posted a strong performance in the A Section, winning her heat and placing fifth overall in 23.56 seconds.

Kentucky throwers enjoyed new success at the Vanderbilt Invite, picking up an event win and three personal bests in the shot put. Grayson Brashear threw the shot over 17 meters for the first time in his career on his way to the victory in the open section of the Men’s Shot Put. Colin Wilson was not far off his personal best, taking home third place.

In the Women’s open section, Shelby Wingler joined the 15 meter club with her personal best throw that was good enough for second place. Amya Livingston also had a personal best in the event, placing sixth.

On Friday, Kate Powers threw a NCAA leading personal best and school record throw of 22.63 meters to finish as the top collegian at the Vanderbilt Invite. Freshman Sharmelle Holmes reset her freshman 60m record with a new personal best of 7.24 seconds on her way to a runner-up finish at the Corky Classic.

The Wildcats will sit idle next week before returning to competition at the end of the month at the Razorback Invitational. Competition in Fayetteville will take place from January 31-February 1 at the Randal Tyson Track Center and will be broadcast on the SEC Network +.
