Swimming & Diving to Compete at Purdue on Friday

by Greg Welsh

West Lafayette, Ind. – Kentucky swimming & diving is back in the pool this Friday as the Wildcats travel to Purdue where the UK men will go head-to-head against the Boilermakers, while the women compete in a tri-meet with Purdue and Notre Dame. Competition is set to begin at 10 a.m. from the Morgan J. Burke Aquatic Center. Live results will be available via Meet Mobile and DiveMeets.

The Wildcat women are coming off a strong performance against Vanderbilt last Friday where they defeated the Commodores, 174-82. Junior Grace Frericks and freshmen Katy Jost, Hayden Penny and Billie Sherratt all won two events individually, while Frericks was also a part of two winning relays. The victory in Nashville improved the UK women to 3-4 in dual meets this season.

Frericks and fifth year Bridget Engel both hold top 50 times in the country this season. Engel ranks 27th in the 100 breast and 30th in the 200 breast, while Frericks comes in at 45th in the 200 back.

Kentucky’s men return to competition for the first time since taking down No. 9 Tennessee last month, 173-127. Carson Hick (200 free, 500 free) and Jonathan Rom (100 breast, 200 breast) won a pair of events each, part of the squad’s 10 total victories on the day. The team improved to 2-3 in dual meets this season and received votes in the latest poll from the College Swimming & Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA).

Four different Wildcat men’s swimmers rank inside the nation’s top 50, headlined by Hick who is 10th in the 1650 free and 21st in the 500 free. Fellow distance swimmer Levi Sandidge follows closely behind, ranking 12th in the mile and 21st in the 400 IM. Ryan Merani (28th, 200 fly) and Rom (32nd, 200 breast) join their teammates as top 50 performers.
