Men’s Soccer Falls to Mountaineers in Sun Belt Semifinals
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Four-seeded Kentucky men’s soccer (6-6-6, 5-3-3 Sun Belt) fell in the semifinal round of the Sun Belt Tournament Conference to one-seeded and No. 10-ranked West Virginia (12-1-6, 6-0-4 Sun Belt), 2-1, in Morgantown, W.Va.
Logan Dorsey did not waste any time getting the Cats on the scoreboard with an unassisted right-footed goal in the second minute of the match. However, the Mountaineers answered quickly in the 5’ equalizing the contest, 1-1. Sergio Ors Navarro scored the first WVU goal from a corner kick, assisted by Felix Ewald and Frederik Jorgensen.
With the first half of time expired, the score remained 1-1. The Mountaineers notched their second goal of the match in the 54’ once against from a corner set piece. Carlos Hernando recorded the score with an assist from Jorgensen to give WVU the 2-1 advantage. The score did not change for the remainder of the match advancing the Mountaineers to the Sun Belt Conference Tournament championship match.
West Virginia will face the winner of two-seeded Marshall and six-seeded James Madison on Sunday for the tournament title.
Kentucky and West Virginia hold an updated all-time series record of 3-1-2 (UK) with the first face-off between the programs taking place in 2001. UK and WVU went head-to-head in the regular season resulting in a scoreless draw in Morgantown.
The Wildcats close the 2024 match slate with an even number of wins, losses and draws not advancing to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2017.
