Jack Schoenberger Extends Top 20 Streak as Wildcats Take 10th in Chicago

LAKE FOREST, Ill. – Junior Jack Schoenberger posted his third top 20 of the fall, and the 17th consecutive of his collegiate career, as Kentucky men’s golf finished in tenth place at the Windon Memorial Classic, hosted by Northwestern at Conway Farms Golf Club (par 71, 7,432 yards).

After starting Monday morning by putting the finishing touches on a 13-over par second round (297), the Wildcats continued on to notch a 9-over par 293 in the final round. That effort put the team at 25-over for the tournament and in 10th place among 16 competing schools.

Starting his final round on hole No. 13, Schoenberger birdied the 15th hole and added another on the par-5 18th. His only blemishes on the round came with a bogey on No. 17 and a double bogey on the par-4 No. 4. The Alpharetta, Georgia native made par on his final eight holes of the day to secure his place among the top 20 individuals in a tie for 17th. Schoenberger, who was a counting score in all three rounds this week, has now been a counting score in all nine of his rounds for the Cats this fall. The Windon Memorial Classic marks the second-straight tournament in which he has finished as Kentucky’s top individual.

Redshirt sophomore Solomon Petrie, who opened the tournament with a career-low score in round one, finished the event tied for 32nd. It was the second-best result of the Akron, Ohio native’s college career and his highest finish this season. Petrie closed his day with a bang, birding his final two holes of the day, No. 13 and No. 14, to post a 74 in round three (+3).

Also finishing strong on Monday was true freshman Gavin Clutts, who birdied two of his final four holes to match the best 18 of his young college career. Starting on No. 16, Clutts had three circles on his card for the round, making birdies on No. 1, No. 12 and No. 14 on his way to a 73 (+2), the second-lowest final round for the Wildcats. Clutts was a counting score in all three rounds for UK on the tournament, the first time he has achieved that feat in his three career starts. He placed 51st in the 88-player field overall.

Captain Jansen Preston began his day by polishing off an even-par 71 in round two and ended it by posting a final round 74 (+3) which included birdies on hole Nos. 1, 3 and 6. Preston tied for 52nd in the tournament individually at 11-over par total. His second-round 71 marked his fourth round of even-par this season. The Lexington native led Kentucky with 10 birdies on the week.

Rounding out the Kentucky lineup was graduate Jackson Klutznick, who carded a final round of 75 (+4) to tie for 77th. The transfer from Emory birdied his first hole of the day, No. 14, and added a second birdie on No. 11. He had seven birdies over the course of the 54-hole tournament.

Arizona was crowned the tournament champion at 10-under par total, one of just two teams to finish the event under-par. Marquette’s Patrick Alder was the wire-to-wire individual champion with an 11-under total.

Kentucky will be right back in action next Monday and Tuesday when the team hosts the inaugural Cullan Brown Collegiate at Lexington Country Club. It will mark the first home event for Kentucky men’s golf since 2015.
