Second Round Goes Unfinished, Men’s Golf Tied for Eighth at Windon Memorial Classic

LAKE FOREST, Ill. – More than ten hours on the course at Conway Farms Golf Club (par 71, 7,432 yards) were not enough to complete 36 holes of competition as play at the Windon Memorial Classic was suspended due to darkness on Sunday with Kentucky tied for eighth at 13-over par.

Players have between two and five holes remaining on their second rounds, which will be completed tomorrow morning prior to the start of the final round. Play will resume at 9:30 a.m. ET with all pairings remaining the same.

The Wildcats found some success on the opening day of action, particularly from Jack Schoenberger and Solomon Petrie. Schoenberger, a junior transfer from Belmont, leads the UK pack at even-par for the tournament, tied for 12th place individually. Petrie, meanwhile, began his tournament with a new career best 18 holes, firing a 2-under par, 69 in round one. The redshirt sophomore is currently 5-over par on his second round with two holes remaining, tied for 25th on the leaderboard at 3-over, overall.

Kentucky put together a strong first round as a team and found itself tied for third after 18 holes. Both Schoenberger and Petrie recorded 2-under par marks in round one, while freshman Gavin Clutts and grad-transfer Jackson Klutznick joined as counting scores with totals of 74 (+3) and 75 (+4), respectively. The Cats’ 3-over total of 287 was the team’s second-best score on the young season and included a total of 17 birdies between the five members of the starting lineup. Petrie’s career best scorecard featured a team high five birdies, including a pair back-to-back on hole Nos. 8 and 9.

UK climbed as high as second place as round two got underway after senior captain Jansen Preston opened his afternoon with birdies on his first two holes, Nos. 14 and 15. At the time play was suspended, Preston owned the lowest score for Kentucky in the second round at 1-under par through 14 holes. The Lexington native is tied for 48th in the tournament alongside his teammate Clutts, who is also 7-over par total.

Some difficulties on Conway Farms’ front nine saw Kentucky fall down the leaderboard as round two progressed, but the Cats were ultimately able to finish the day with some momentum aided by an eagle from Schoenberger on No. 8, back-to-back birdies by Petrie on Nos. 10 and 11, and three birds in a four-hole stretch by Preston on No. 5, No. 7 and No. 8.

At day’s end, Arizona sits atop the 16-team field at 6-under par, one shot clear of host Northwestern. Marquette’s Patrick Adler is the individual leader with a 9-under par score thus far, pacing the 88 competitors.
