Women’s Soccer Comes Back Twice for 2-2 Draw with Oklahoma

NORMAN, Okla. – Kentucky women’s soccer (8-1-3, 0-1-3) came from behind twice on Sunday to battle the Sooners (8-3-1, 1-2-1) to a 2-2 draw in the first meeting between the two programs. The match is the second straight draw and third in Southeastern Conference play so far this season for the Wildcats.

The Wildcats were outshot by the Sooners 10-4 overall with the Cats putting four shots on goal to Oklahoma’s three. Marz Josephson made one save for Kentucky while the Sooners were called for 13 fouls to Kentucky’s 11. Five yellow cards were issued in the match with two going to Kentucky’s Tanner Strickland and Sophia Mattice.

It was an eventful first half of play with all four goals coming in the opening 45 minutes. The home side struck early scoring after only four minutes with a goal from Sophia Green. The forward received a low cross in the box, turned, and saw her shot bounce off Josephson’s glove and post into the side netting for 1-0.

In a wild sequence of events, three goals were then scored between the two sides within six minutes of play. Makala Woods restored things to 1-1 in the 21st minute after running onto a pass over the top not dealt with by the Sooner defense. She powered through the defense, bringing the ball down with her chest in the box, and placed it past Oklahoma goalkeeper Caroline Duffy for her sixth goal of the season.

In the 24th minute, Oklahoma went ahead at 2-1 with a free kick scored from Leonie Weber just outside the 18-yard box into the top left corner of the net. It was a great finish and nothing Marz Josephson could do about it despite her best efforts.

Finally, in the 27th minute, Mia Bookhard tied things up with a header into the top corner finishing off a cross from Alexis Tylenda. It marked Mia’s second goal of the season and Tylenda’s first career assist. Both teams chipped away at each other in the second half looking for the winner, but no major chances came about for the Wildcats in the final 45 minutes.

Kentucky remains on the road this week traveling to Tuscaloosa, Alabama on Friday, October 4th. Kickoff is set for 8 p.m.
