Laney Frye Selected to All-SEC First Team, Marissa Wenzler Named to SEC Community Service Team

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Laney Frye, a senior University of Kentucky women’s golfer, has been selected to the All-Southeastern Conference First Team, it was announced by the league office Wednesday. Moreover, Marissa Wenzler, a graduate student on the team, has been named to the SEC Community Service Team.

For the first time in her college career, Frye has been selected to the All-SEC First Team, which includes the top eight golfers in the league, according to the coaches.

The Wildcat boasts a 70.7 stroke average on nine tournaments and 26 rounds, which if the season ended today would be a single-season school record. That is one year after she reset that school record on a 70.9 in 2022-23. Through her 26 rounds this season, 16 have been par-or-better, while 15 have been better-than-par. Her 16 rounds of par-or-better are second most in program history, only behind her school record of 20 that she recorded last season.

She recently finished a career-best third place (-6) in the 65-person field at the 2024 SEC Tournament in April, while she paced the field with 13 birdies for the event.

In nine tournaments this season, she has finished in the top 20 on seven occasions, in the top 15 on six occasions, in the top 10 on five occasions and in the top five on three occasions.

She also made the cut at the 2024 Augusta National Women’s Amateur, one year after making the tournament for the first time.

Frye currently holds four individual program records (single-season scoring average, single-season par-or-better rounds, lowest 18-hole round, career par-or-better rounds) and is in position to be able to reset three of those before the season ends.

In the last round of her junior season in 2022-23, Frye set the school record on a 63 (-9) at the NCAA Pullman Regional in Pullman, Washington. Ironically, in the first round of her senior season in 2023-24, she set the second-best round of her career on a 64 (-7) at the Cougar Classic in Charleston, South Carolina.

Wenzler has supplemented her golf career and academics with nearly 50 hours of community service during her time at the University of Kentucky.

In 2023-24, the graduate transfer, who owns a 4.0 GPA in her master’s program, has already donated time to God’s Pantry, Operation Christmas Child, Kentucky Kids Belong, Patriot Praise, Julius Marcs Elementary School and Education Day at UK women’s basketball’s exhibition game in November.

For Kentucky Kids Belong, Wenzler used her contagious and warming personality to hang out and talk to children who are in Foster Care, comforting and encouraging them through the difficult process. Beyond this season, she also volunteered at various organizations throughout her college career like Kentucky Children’s Hospital, XC Race at Keeneland, Salvation Army and Menorah Lighting Event. During her multiple times volunteering for the Kentucky Children’s Hospital, she gave the patients “Joy Jars” and spent time simply hanging out and having fun with them.

Wenzler also is a regular bell ringer for the Salvation Army, spending numerous hours each Christmas helping fundraise money for the worthy cause.

Wenzler recently won the most improved award at the program’s annual senior banquet. The graduate student owns a 73.1 stroke average through nine tournaments and 26 rounds this season, which is currently second best on the team. She has clocked three finishes inside the top 20 this season, with one of those being tied for 10th place at the rigorous Ruth’s Chris Tar Heel Invitational in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, in October.
