Tate Sandman Named Men's Tennis Captain

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Kentucky men’s tennis has named its first captain for the 2023-24 season, tabbing senior Tate Sandman to the role on Wednesday.

“Tate deserves this captainship,” head coach Cedric Kauffmann said. “This is one of the biggest accomplishments and jobs on the tennis team. He is a pillar of our program and has served his teammates and Kentucky with love, hard work, consistency and compassion. He will make some big decisions with the coaches, and I can’t wait for him to take on that role.”

A native of Raleigh, N.C. majoring in Human Health Science, Sandman is a three-time ITA Scholar-Athlete and a two-time All-SEC Community Service Team selection. He appeared in two ITA doubles rankings his freshman year, peaking at No. 76 alongside Millen Hurrion.

“Since being here Tate has grown and developed a lot of leadership skills particularly with his communication and management,” assistant coach Matthew Gordon said. “He is a member of the SAAC, he helps in the community and is somebody who always puts others ahead of himself. He is very well respected among the players and the coaching staff and understands the standards and expectations we set here at Kentucky.”

“It means everything,” Sandman said. “Knowing that the coaches and players think highly of my actions and opinion is a huge honor.”

Kentucky will name its remaining captains later this year.
