NCAA MEN’S SOCCER SECOND ROUND POSTGAME QUOTES

KENTUCKY VS. SOUTH FLORIDA

THE BELL – LEXINGTON, KY.

NOVEMBER 20, 2022

UK Head Coach Johan Cedergren

Opening statement …

“Really proud to be sitting here. Happy for the performance: 4-0 in the second round of the NCAA Tournament, it’s a really good score. To be able to keep a clean sheet. Excited to go for another week. I told the guys at halftime that I could already smell the turkey. They went and they scored three goals to make sure that we got to stay together for at least another week to play Pitt (in the Sweet 16). There have been so many questions asked about this team that I don’t know what else to add other than this group is a very special group. These two men (players sitting next to him at the postgame press conference: Martin Soeride and Clay Holstad) are very special men and they’re a big part of what we do. But again, one through 25, I couldn’t be any more proud of them. They find a way to perform every single day in training. And they find a way to perform every single game that we have. The last thing I would say is just a huge thank you to the Big Blue Nation. They came out in force again. I know it was brutal conditions, but we’re excited to host them. (Team public relations contact) Allyson (Warren) told me it’s going to be 75 and sunny next weekend when we’re playing. Again, huge thanks and hope to see you again next Sunday.”

On Kentucky’s ability to score multiple goals to kill games off …

“This year we definitely had our front three and four as some of the best in the nation and this year we are definitely better at putting away chances and getting the lead and keeping that lead instead of fighting to win games 1-0. It’s easier when you are putting three-to-four goals away instead of the one or two we are used to.”

On what has clicked for the team this year …

“I think its just harping on it in training that’s what we’ve by working on the past couple of years. Our coaching staff has been working hard. We’re building out and then we’re doing a lot of final third stuff and with (Assistant Coach) Ryan (Zinkhan) building up our final patterns it’s really showing out in games.”

#6, Martin Soereide, midfielder

On scoring the game’s first goal …
“Its been a while since I’ve scored so it was nice to finally put one in the back of the net again. I just found myself completely alone on the left side. [Ben] Damge found me. He’s been very good all season to find the right spaces and play the right passes, so couldn’t have scored without my teammates setting it up for me.”
