Brashear, McNair Qualify for NCAA Championships on Opening Day of East First Round
LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Kentucky Wildcats totaled two NCAA Championship qualifiers, five first round qualifiers and two top 10 program marks on the opening day of the NCAA East First Round event on home turf.
Anthony Waterman kicked off the opening day of the east regionals for the Wildcats by qualifying for the men’s 110m hurdles quarterfinal on Friday. He ran the eighth-fastest qualifying time in the first-round event with a career-best mark of 13.43 seconds, moving him into No. 2 all time in Kentucky history.
In the men’s long jump event, Kingi McNair featured as the first Wildcat of the week to punch his ticket to Eugene for the NCAA Championships. The Kentucky freshman qualified for the national event by placing ninth and a personal-best mark of 7.72m/25-4, moving him into No. 4 all-time at UK.
Grayson Brashear would later follow suit and qualify for the NCAA Championships in the men’s shot put semifinal. Brashear punched his ticket to Eugene with the best mark of his career at 18.91m/62-.05.
In the first round of the men’s 100m event, Miles Jones and Denzel Simusialela both took third in their heats to advance to the quarterfinals on Friday night, with Jones in 11th with a time of 10.13 and Simusialela in 14th at 10.16.
Junior TK Pahuwa added his name to the list of Wildcat prelim qualifiers, advancing to second round of the men’s 400m event with a time of 45.72.
In the penultimate event of the evening, Waterman would secure his second qualifying mark of the day in the men’s 400m hurdles. Waterman advanced to the national quarterfinal on Friday night with the eighth-fastest qualifying time at 49.89.
The NCAA East First Round will continue tomorrow morning at the UK Outdoor Track and Field Complex at 10 a.m. ET with Kate Powers and Meagan Ewers competing in the women’s hammer throw event.
