Gabriel Diallo Victorious in Wimbledon Debut
LONDON– Playing at the All England Lawn Tennis Club for the first time in his career, former Kentucky men’s tennis player Gabriel Diallo did not waste the opportunity to claim his first victory on those hallowed grounds, defeating Germany’s Daniel Altmaier 6-1, 6-2, 6-4 in an hour and 41 minutes.
The Canadian Wildcat surged into the lead, winning five games on the trot, and held the advantage for the entire match. Diallo blasted seven aces and 30 winners while holding serve in 12 of 13 opportunities.
Diallo has now won the opening round contest in each of his last four Grand Slam appearances and holds a winning record in career best-of-five set matches. The Canadian currently holds a career-high ranking of No. 40 after claiming his first career ATP Tour title in ‘s-Hertogenbosch earlier this month.
Diallo awaits either Taylor Fritz, the tournament’s No. 5 seed, or Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard in a second round set to take place on Wednesday. The All-American who played at Kentucky from 2020-2022 will aim to make his second appearance in a major third round after the Canadian broke through to the Round of 32 at the 2024 US Open.
