Men’s 4x100m Relay Team, Kiprop Kipngok and Makarawu all Advance to NCAA Finals on Opening Day in Eugene

EUGENE, Ore. – Day one of the NCAA Outdoor Championships is in the books for the Kentucky Wildcats at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore., finishing the day with three final  qualifiers in three prelim events on Wednesday.

The men’s 4x100m relay team, featuring Miles Jones, Clinton Muunga, Josh Onwunili and Carlie Makarawu, finished seventh in the semifinals, posting a group-best 38.60 time, to advance to the national final on Friday. That mark of 38.60 comes in at number three on the UK program leaderboards for the 4x100m relay, just 0.17 seconds off the school record, which was posted earlier this season at the Texas Relays on Mar. 29.

In the second event of the evening for the Cats, freshman sensation Collins Kiprop Kipngok, recently announced SEC Men’s Freshman Runner of the Year, also advanced to the final round on Friday in the men’s 3000m steeplechase semifinal. He finished third in the event with an 8:24.94 time, his third-best time of the season thus far.

Carlie Makarawu completed the trifecta for the Wildcats, going three-for-three on the day in qualifying, by finishing seventh in the men’s 200m semifinal with a 20.14 time. He will look to add another 200m NCAA title to his resume during Friday’s final and defend his 200m championship dating back to the indoor season.

The NCAA Outdoor Championships will continue tomorrow with the opening day of the women’s events, starting with Kate Powers in the hammer throw final at 4:30 p.m. EST. Day two from Eugene will conclude with the women’s 4x400m relay semifinal at 10:36 p.m. EST.
