Powers Punches Ticket to Eugene, 10 Wildcats Advance to Quarterfinals on Day Two of NCAA East Regionals
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – For the second consecutive day, the Wildcats faced a lengthy severe weather delay on day two in Jacksonville, Fla. at the NCAA East First Rounds, but were able to come away with one punched ticket to Eugene, 10 qualifiers into Saturday’s quarterfinals and another broken school record.
Once again, freshman sensation Janet Jepkemboi Amimo was one of the highlights of the day for the Wildcats, breaking her own UK program record in the first round of the women’s 800m to advance to the quarterfinal on Saturday. Jepkemboi Amimo’s 2:01.78 time, which features as the second time she has broken the school 800m record this season, was good for third place in the event.
Kate Powers kicked off day two in Jacksonville in the morning field events for the Cats by punching her ticket to Eugene for the NCAA Championships for the second consecutive season in the women’s hammer throw event, placing ninth with a 63.91m/2090-8 mark.
In the first running event of the day, two Wildcats advanced to the second round of the women’s 100m hurdles, with Emmi Scales and Camden Bentley finishing 10th and 11th, respectively, with nearly identical times of 13.07 and 13.08, tying a personal best for Bentley.
During the afternoon and evening slate of running events, Sharmelle Holmes (100m), Alysia Johnson (400m), Jenna Schwinghamer (800m), Scales (400m hurdles) and Hannah Douglas, Holmes and Stacey Onyepunuka (200m) each advanced to their respective quarterfinals by placing inside the top 24. Those events will begin on Saturday at 6:15 p.m. EST to close out the NCAA East First Rounds.
Day three from Jacksonville will begin with the postponed women’s pole vault event, featuring Payton Phillips, at 9:30 a.m. EST. Tomorrow’s event will conclude with Ed Bird running in the men’s 5000m semifinal at 8:10 p.m. EST.
