Two Wildcats Finish in the Top 20, Kentucky Lands in Sixth Place out of 17 Teams
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Elin Pudas Remler shined yet again in her rookie season, placing in the top 10 in the elite field at the Ruth’s Chris Tar Heel Invitational at Finley Golf Club (par 70, 6,081 yards) in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. As a team, University of Kentucky women’s golf’s young lineup finished in sixth place out of 17 teams, going 13-over in the final round and 30-over for the tournament.
In a fivesome that featured three freshmen, one sophomore and one senior, it was the rookie, Pudas Remler of Gothenburg, Sweden, that paced the Wildcats. Stringing together a 70, 71 and 72 for a 3-over-par 213 tournament total, Pudas Remler earned 10th place in the 90-person field, just three shots off the top three.
In just three tournaments in her college career, she already has two top-10 finishes, including tying for third place in the season opener at the Bettie Lou Evans Invitational. Her 3-over tournament total this week marked her second-best scoring output of the season, while she is pacing the team with all nine of her rounds counted toward the team totals and a 72.2 stroke average.
She revealed her resiliency today, fighting five bogeys with three birdies in the final round.
Just behind her was senior Marta López Echevarría, who had an uncharacteristic start to the tournament with a 77 on Friday, but she bounced back with two great rounds of 69 and 71 on Saturday and Sunday. She finished 7-over-par 217 for the weekend, earning a share of 19th place. The veteran didn’t compete in Kentucky’s most previous tournament, its second tournament of the season, so of her two events this fall, she has finished in the top 20 in both.
Cathryn Brown, the sophomore from Eddyville, Kentucky, who didn’t even begin competing until last spring, shot 72, 75 and another 75 in the final round Sunday. She was just 1-over through her first 11 holes, rolling in a pair of birdies during that series, but she got caught up in a string of bogeys down the stretch. Her 12-over-par 222 tournament total landed her in a share for 40th place.
Another freshman, Karlie Campbell, competed in her first lineup for UK at the Ruth’s Chris Tar Heel Invitational. She paired together a 70, 78 and 75 over the weekend, at one point even finding herself in the top 10 on the individual leaderboard during the first round. Campbell and Pudas Remler tied for the team lead in birdies in the final round, with three apiece. She recorded just one more stroke than Brown did throughout the tournament, going 13-over for T42.
Rounding out UK’s young lineup, C.A. Carter, a freshman from Lexington, Kentucky, shed five strokes off her second round, turning in a 77 in the final round Sunday. She shot 21-over altogether, finishing tied for 66th place out of the 90-person field.
The Wildcats still have one more tournament this fall, the two-day Charles Schwab Women’s Collegiate Invitational on Oct. 28 and Oct. 29. That fall iteration of the tournament will be played at Ridglea Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas, while the spring iteration will be at the prestigious Colonial Country Club in Forth Worth.
