Kentucky Track & Field Wraps Up Indoor Regular Season

BOSTON, Ma., and CLEMSON, S.C. — The University of Kentucky track and field program completed the David Hemery Valentine Invitational and the Tiger Paw Invite today as the Wildcats close out their 2024 indoor regular season.

Kentucky saw two event wins today on the men’s side with junior Alex Justus earning his first career event win in the 800 meters and senior Keaton Daniel securing his third victory this season in the pole vault clearing 18’5.50”/5.63 meters.

Fourteen Wildcats finished in the top 10 today with six of those finishes being in the top five. There were seven personal bests.

Throughout the indoor season, the Wildcats racked up nine records including two freshman records. Kentucky also had 37 event wins with 76 personal bests after seven meets.

FINALS RECAP

SPRINTS & HURDLES

200M

WOMEN – Sophomore Hannah Douglas placed eighth with a personal best time of 23.15 that ranks 7th on the UK all-time performers list.

Junior Victoria Perrow placed 33rd overall with a personal best time of 23.91.

MEN – Freshman Shavique Bascus finished second overall with a personal best time of 20.72 that ties for 5th on the UK all-time performers list. He managed the achievement in only his second appearance as a Wildcat.

RELAYS

4X400M

WOMEN – Kentucky’s “A” team consisting of junior Alysia Johnson, senior Jania Martin, junior Hannah Douglas, and freshman Oneika McAnnuff ran a season-best 3:35.21 to finish seventh.

MEN – Kentucky’s “A” team consisting of sophomore Brandon Nyandoro, graduate student Kennedy Lightner, freshman Shavique Bascus, and graduate student Ethan Brown finished ninth with a time of 3:08.73.

DISTANCE

800M

WOMEN – Freshman Lyric Olson tied her highest career finish in the event at fourth after setting a personal best time of 2:09.81.Freshman Cha’iel Johnson returned to action for the Wildcats placing seventh with a time of 2:10.65.

MEN – Junior Alex Justus won the first event of his career with a time of 1:51.30.

3000M

WOMEN – Freshman Elaina Lahmers finished fifth with a personal best time of 10:11.18 while freshman Ainsley Edwards was just behind in sixth at 10:11.34.

MEN – At the David Hemery Valentine Invitational senior Jake Allen ran the second-fastest time in school history with a 7:58.05 personal best. The time is only five seconds off the school record of 7:53.05 held by Jacob Thomson set in 2018.

Freshman Caden Miracle finished seventh with a personal best time of 8:22.46 while sophomore Cade Byer set a personal best time of 8:36.93 to finish 13th at the Tiger Paw Invitational.

JUMPS

POLE VAULT

MEN – Keaton Daniel won his third event of the season with a clearance of 18’5.50”/5.63 meters.

Senior Dalton Shepler finished eighth with a clearance of 16’4”/4.98 meters. It marked his fourth top-10 finish this season.

Sophomore Brayden Jackson placed ninth with a clearance of 15’10”/4.83 meters. It marked his third top-10 finish of the season.

TRIPLE JUMP

MEN – Junior Luke Brown continued his fine form in the event finishing third with a mark of 54’6.75”/16.63 meters. It marks the third straight finish in the podium places for Brown this season.

UP NEXT

The Wildcats will return to Fayetteville, Arkansas for the 2024 Southeastern Conference Indoor Championships on February 23-24. The Wildcats collected nine medals at last year’s event as both sides finished seventh overall.
