Four UKTF Men Advance To Austin After Day One of NCAA East Prelims
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Four Kentucky track and field student athletes on the men’s side punched a ticket to the NCAA Division I Track and Field Championships in Austin, Texas today while four more advanced to Friday’s track finals.
Tickets Punched
Keaton Daniel took first in the pole vault competition today with a clearance of 17’8.50”/5.40 meters. The three time SEC champion reached a stopping point after two clearances with a majority of the 12-man field already decided.
SEC bronze medalist Josh Sobota kept his good momentum in the shot put going tonight after he placed seventh with a throw of 63’2.25”/19.26 meters. The graduate earned his qualifying spot on his second throw out of three allowed attempts.
Both Jordan Turner and Robbie Springfield punched tickets to Austin in the long jump. Turner placed sixth with a jump of 25’3.25”/7.70 meters (1.3) while Springfield was just behind in seventh with an outdoor personal best of 24’10.50”/7.58 meters (1.9) that ties for eighth on the UK all-time performers list. This will be the first outdoor championship appearance for the pair.
Track Qualifiers
Four Wildcat sprinters on the men’s side advanced out of the first round prelims today to Friday’s quarterfinal rounds in two separate events.
Both Brian Faust and Wayne Lawrence Jr. moved on in the 400 meters while the pair of Kennedy Lightner and Brandon Miller advanced in the 200 meters.
Faust and Lawrence Jr. earned the automatic qualifier in their respective heats. Faust placed sixth with a time of 45.97 while Lawrence Jr. finished 17th with a time of 46.53.
Lightner earned the automatic qualifier with the second fastest time in school history in the 200 meters at 20.23 (0.7) to finish sixth. Miller placed 22nd with a time of 20.69 (2.5) and earned a qualification spot in Friday’s quarterfinal.
The UKTF women will start competition at the NCAA East Preliminaries tomorrow starting at 6 p.m. ET.
