ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Georgia – Senior Alex Goff put together another quality round, carding a 2-under-par 68 to sit in fourth at 5-under after the second round of the SEC Championship Thursday at the Seaside Course at Sea Island Golf Club in St. Simons Island, Georgia. As a team, the Cats sit 13th after posting a 1-over-par 281 in the second round.
The Cats, who will be paired with South Carolina, tee off in final-round play starting at 9:10 a.m. Friday. The top eight teams advance to match play over the weekend.
After an up-and-down first seven holes, which featured two birdies, a bogey and a double bogey, Goff went on to par his next eight holes before carding a birdie on each of his last three. Goff sits three strokes back of Tennessee’s Caleb Surratt, who leads the tournament at 8-under, followed by Alabama’s Canon Claycomb and Thomas Ponder, who sit second and third at 7-under and 6-under, respectively.
The round marked Goff’s team-high 21st round of par or better and 18th round under-par this season. He leads the field in par-4 scoring at 5-under while playing the par-5’s in 2-under.
Graduate Garrett Wood turned in a solid second round, carding four birdies against three bogeys, moving up 12 spots into a tie for 27th at even-par after a 1-under 69. A native of Mason, Ohio, Wood now has 14 rounds of par or better, including 10 under-par this season.
Graduate Dhaivat Pandya and junior Campbell Kremer are tied for 62nd at 8-over through 36 holes. Pandya carded two birdies against five bogeys on his way to a 3-over 73 while Kremer responded after an opening triple bogey on the 10th hole, his first of the day, to notch five birdies against three bogeys the rest of the way en route to a 1-over 71.
Freshman Kevin Watts bounced back from a tough opening round to post a 3-over 73 to sit in a tie for 67th.
