LEXINGTON, Ky. – West Virginia’s Marcus Caldeira put the lone goal of the game for either side in the back of the net at the 70th minute to power WVU to a 1-0 victory over Coastal Carolina and seal the Mountaineers spot in the semifinals of the 2022 Sun Belt Conference Men’s Soccer Tournament.

 

WVU (7-6-4) will advance to face the winner of Kentucky and South Carolina in the semifinals on Wednesday. The game will be played at the Bell Soccer Complex and start at 7 p.m. ET. ESPN+ will broadcast the game, while live stats are available online at KentuckyStats.com.

 

Both teams played a scoreless first half with neither team recording a shot-on-goal. In the second half, Coastal Carolina (5-5-6) recorded the first shot-on-goal of the game in the 51st minute. Twenty minutes later, WVU recorded its first shot-on-goal of the game and made it count with Caldeira finding the side of the goal with his left foot. The goal was assisted by Adam Burchell.

 

Coastal Carolina had its second shot-on-goal in the 77th minute with Alvaro Garcia-Pascual putting one on target for WVU’s Jackson Lee to save. CCU also had another chance in the 84th minute but it was met with a nice save by Lee, who was injured briefly in the first half going up for a save and crashing into the side of the goal. Lee’s clean sheet in the game was his fourth of the season.

 

Overall, WVU had 10 shots, two on-goal, 10 fouls and three corner kicks. Coastal Carolina had seven shots, three shots-on-goal, 13 fouls and four corners.

 

The two teams met earlier this season in Morgantown, W.Va., with the game ending in a 0-0 tie. WVU tied both Kentucky and South Carolina earlier this season in Morgantown as well.
