Steiner Named SEC Women’s Co-Runner of the Week

LEXINGTON, Ky. — Kentucky women’s track and field senior sprinter Abby Steiner has been named the SEC Women’s Co-Runner of the Week by the Southeastern Conference.

Steiner shares the award with Sintayehu Vissa from Ole Miss.

Steiner has won the award three times during her career, as she earned it twice during the 2021 indoor season.

The senior from Ohio turned in outstanding runs in the 60-meter and 4x400m relay at the Red Raider Open at Texas Tech last weekend. She earned a personal best in the 60m, placing second with a time of 7.17 (7.19 after altitude conversion). The mark ranks fastest in the SEC and second-fastest in the NCAA this season.

She moved up to fourth all-time in Kentucky history, lowering her PB by .04 seconds.

Steiner also was the second leg in the NCAA- and world-leading 4x400m relay on January 21 in Lubbock, where she joined Masai Russell, Karimah Davis and Alexis Holmes to run 3:28.62 (3:29.06 after altitude conversion) and win the race. The time was also a school record.

Steiner has earned weekly honors multiple time this indoor season, including United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Athlete of the Week in December after she broke the 300m collegiate record with a 35.80 run.

The All-American also is on The Bowerman Preseason Watch List, awarded by the USTFCCCA.

Steiner is a two-time school, SEC and collegiate record-holder in the 200m (22.38) and 300m (35.80). She earned her collegiate record at 2021 NCAA Indoor Championships where she won her first NCAA individual title.

Along with the rest of Kentucky track & field, Steiner will compete in the second home meet of the indoor season: the 2022 Rod McCravy Memorial meet on Friday, January 28 and Saturday, January 29 in Nutter Field House.
