by Deb Moore

AWENDAW, S.C. – For the second consecutive tournament four Kentucky men’s golf starters opened with par or lower. UK is in the middle of the pack through the opening 18 holes of play at the Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate as Garrett Wood paced the Cats with a 2-under-par 70 and UK concluded the day at 4-under par and in seventh place overall.

South Carolina leads the field at 17-under par and Ole Miss fired an 11-under par score which was good for second. East Tennessee State is in third behind an 8-under score. Kentucky is a mere four shots off being in the top three as the remainder of the field is tightly bunched heading into Monday’s second round.

The Wildcats will tee off from the No. 1 on Monday beginning at 9 a.m. ET. UK will be paired alongside Wisconsin and Purdue on day two.

Wood generated his 13th par-or-better scorecard of the season to lead the way. The Mason, Ohio, native is tied for 12th with a 2-under 70. The Cats began the round on the back nine and Wood made the turn at even-par. He picked up birdies at the second and fourth to move to under par and into contention for a third top-10 finish of the season.

Jacob Cook and Alex Goff are both tied for 26th following a 1-under 71 to open the Hootie at Bulls Bay. Cook has now fired a par-or-better score in six straight rounds. The Frankfort, Kentucky, native faced adversity early with a double-bogey on his fifth hole, but he responded with a birdie at the par-four 15th to make the turn at 1-over. Birdies at the fourth and eighth got him to under par heading into Monday’s second round with momentum.

Goff played even par over his first eight holes and earned a birdie at the 18th before making the turn under par. He picked up another stroke at the par-five fourth but concluded the round at 1-under following a bogey at the sixth.

Campbell Kremer continued his steady play with an even-par 72 and is tied for 42nd on the individual leaderboard. Kremer birdied his opening hole and made the turn at 1-under par. Kremer fought off three bogeys at the first, second and third with birdies at the fourth and sixth to even his scorecard out.

Zach Norris, playing as an individual, is tied for 70th following a 3-over 75, while Hugo Archer played 4-over and is tied for 75th.
