Joshua Sobota Named SEC Co-Men’s Field Athlete of the Week

LEXINGTON, Ky. — Kentucky men’s track and field senior thrower Joshua Sobota has been named the Southeastern Conference Co-Men’s Field Athlete of the Week. 

He shares the award with Auburn’s Dontavious Hill. 

Sobota won the shot put and the discus at the Black and Gold Invitational in Orlando last weekend. 

Sobota’s shot put was his best of the year so far, throwing for 63’5.5″/19.34-meters, making himself as the current collegiate leader for the 2022 outdoor season in the event. 

The indoor and outdoor All-American also won the discus throw, in which he earned a personal best throw of 191’8″/58.44m. He now ranks eighth in the NCAA this season in the event and ninth for UK all-time. 

Sobota’s best shot put of the indoor season was 63’5″/19.33m which ranked him 24th in the NCAA for the indoor season.  

The 2021 outdoor season was a successful one for the senior from Tennessee. He finished third in the discus at SEC Championships (188’10″/57.55m) and ninth (184’11″/56.36m) at NCAA Championships in Eugene, Oregon. In the shot put, he placed fifth at NCAAs (65’0.5″/19.82m) for his third best put of his career and second best in a collegiate meet. 

His career best in the shot put at a collegiate meet is 66’3.25″/20.20m from the 2020 indoor season. That same season, Sobota won shot put bronze at SEC Championships, earned second-team All-SEC honors for that performance. 

Sobota has also impressed on the national level during his throwing career, placing second in both the shot put and discus throw at USA Track & Field U20 Championships in 2019. His shot put of 68’6″/20.88m is his all-time best.
